I promised from time to time I'd put up some of my assorted hockey memorabilia up on the blog for youse to peruse. Sorry, it's taken so long, but I can't help if the Blackhawks seemingly play every other day (curse you scheduling gods!). In any case, here is a treat from the golden years of my hockey fandom.
This is a rather large (bigger than a binder) full color photo album that was a game giveaway during what I believe was one of the first home games of the 89-90 season. My folks took us to that game, and being in 8th grade at the time, I spent many an hour pouring over the pictures within. One copy I cut up - I have an assignment notebook with Jeremy Roenick's picture taped to one of the pages. I don't know whatever happened to my original (it's probably buried somewhere in a box at my parents like so many other things), but when I saw this on eBay a few months ago I snatched it up quicker than a cheese danish. I got it for under $10 too - score!
Let's explore, shall we?
Denis Savard:
1989-90 Stats - 60 GP / 27G / 53A / 80P / +3 / 56 PIM
Random GM Facts: Savard was an Alternate for part of the year. Personally, I liked him better with the mustache.
Troy Murray:
1989 - 90 Stats - 68 GP / 17 G / 38A / 55P / -2 / 86 PIM
Random GM Facts: Troy is currently the color man for Hawks games on WGN Radio. My most vivid memory of him is when he nearly choked to death on his plate during a game in 1990. The video below is not for the squeamish...
Steve Larmer:
1989-90 Stats: 80 GP / 31G / 59A / 90P / +25 / 40 PIM
Random GM Facts: Larms is one of my favorite players from this era - so much so that one day I will get his jersey. It's a crime he's not in the Hockey HOF
Doug Wilson:
1989-90 Stats: 70 GP / 23G / 50A / 73P / +13 / 40 PIM
Random GM Facts: Dougie never wore a helmet during his playing days. Seeing as he is the Hawks' all time leader for defenseman in goals, assists & total points, you'd think he'd have his number retired. But I wonder if being the current GM of the San Jose Sharks has prevented that.
Bob Murray:
1989-90 Stats: 49 GP / 5G / 19A / 24P / +3 / 45 PIM
Random GM Facts: This was Murray's last year in the NHL as a player. I never liked him because at the time I thought he looked old and creepy. Now I don't like him because he's the Ducks' GM and throws chairs at women.
Jeremy Roenick:
1989-90 Stats: 78 GP / 26G / 40A / 66P / +2 / 54 PIM
Random GM Facts: This was JR's first full season in the NHL. I loved him and it was a dark day when he was traded to the Coyotes in 1996. He's outspoken and has said shit about the Hawks here and there, but his reaction after the Hawks' SC win tells you where his heart is.
Bob McGill:
1989-90 Stats: 69 GP / 2G / 10A / 12P / -7 / 204 PIM
Random GM Facts: As you can tell by his penalty minute total, McGill was a meatbag. With a glorious mullet. He currently works a TV analyst for the Toronto Marlies (the Leafs' AHL affiliate).
Jacques Cloutier:
1989-90 Stats: 43 GP / 18-15-2 / 3.09 GAA / .880 SV%
Random GM Facts: I really did not like Mr. Cloutier. 1) He took the job away from my forever favorite Chevrier (but lost it to one Mr. Ed Belfour in the '90 playoffs). 2) He looks creepy as shit, doesn't he?
Bob Bassen:
1989-90 Stats: 6 GP / 1G / 1A/ 2P / +1 / 8 PIM
Random GM Facts: Why he was included in the album I don't know - he spent most of the year at the Hawks' farm team at the time, the Indianapolis Ice. He looks like he could be Jack Skille's father, couldn't he?
Duane Sutter:
1989-90 Stats: 72 GP / 4G / 14A / 18P / -2 / 156 PIM
Random GM Facts: One of the infamous Sutter Brothers, this was Duane's last season as a player in the NHL. He is currently Director of Player Personnel for the Calgary Flames where his brother Darryl is the GM and other brother Brent is the Head Coach. No nepotism there, nope.
Greg Gilbert:
1989-90 Stats: 70 GP / 12G / 25A / 37P / +27 / 54 PIM
Random GM Facts: Only player to win the Cup with both NY teams. Currently head coach of Adirondack Phantoms (AHL). That hair color is terrible.
Trent Yawney:
1989-90 Stats: 70 GP / 5G / 15A / 20P / -6 / 82 PIM
Random GM Facts: Trent was head coach of the Hawks from 2005-07. Nothing more needs to be said about those years. He's currently an assistant coach with the Sharks.
Steve Thomas:
1989-90 Stats: 76 GP / 40G / 30A / 70P / -3 / 91 PIM
Random GM Facts: Thomas led the team this year in goals and was another one of my faves. "Stumpy" played for 20 NHL seasons.
Adam Creighton:
1989-90 Stats: 80 GP / 34G / 36A/ 70P / +4 / 224 PIM
Random GM Facts: I was surprised Creighton had so many penalty minutes - he was third on the team. Adam's now a scout for the Bruins.
Wayne Van Dorp:
1989-90 Stats: 61 GP / 7G / 4A / 11P / -3 / 303 PIM
Random GM Facts: Van Dorp (what a name!) is the hands down winner for best hair on this Hawks' squad. Mullet + Spikey = WIN. He led the team in PIM - go figure.
Dirk Graham:
1989-90 Stats: 73 GP / 22G / 32A / 54P / +1 / 102 PIM
Random GM Facts: I find it odd Dirk's not wearing the Captain's "C" in the picture - he was captain from 89-95. Anyone remember those 59 games he was the Hawks' head coach? He's currently a scout for the Sharks.
Mike Hudson:
1989-90 Stats: 49 GP / 9G / 12A / 21P / -3 / 56 PIM
Random GM Facts: Umm - he played in Germany (Mannheim) for awhile? I thought he was kinda cute? Sorry, that's all I got.
Al Secord:
1989-90 Stats: 43 GP / 14G / 7A/ 21P / +5 / 131 PIM
Random GM Facts: This was Secord's last year in the NHL (he played for the Wolves a couple years in the mid-90s). He's the only NHL player to ever record 40 goals and 300 penalty minutes in a season.
Alain Chevrier:
1989-90 Stats: 39 GP / 16-14-3 / 4.18 GAA / .853 SV%
Random GM Facts: Chevy is my FOREVER HOCKEY BOYFRIEND. Don't ask me why I had/have a crush on a player who only played 66 games for the Hawks with middling stats. His play in the 88-89 playoffs endeared himself to me - to the point to this day I'm still considering getting his jersey *sigh*
Wayne Presley:
1989-90 Stats: 49 GP / 6G / 7A / 13P / -19 / 69 PIM
Random GM Facts: The fact that Presley had the worst +/- on the team with less than 50 games played says a lot. Still having the name "Presley" on a Hawks' sweater is pretty cool.
Steve Konroyd:
1989-90 Stats: 75 GP / 3G / 14A / 17P / +6 / 34 PIM
Random GM Facts: Kinda shocking to see Konroyd with that beautiful head of brown hair after watching him on TV these days - he's one of the Hawks' in-studio broadcasters and subs for Edzo.
Now that I'm looking at this, I'm totally missing three players. I must have forgotten to scan that page. I'll edit this to add them later - I know you're eager to hear how Everett Santipass did this year...
Mike Keenan:
Coaching Stats With Blackhawks: 153-126-41
Random GM Facts: Has there ever been a coach that could be so good and so terrible? The kindest thing I can say is that he had a lot more hair back then. I change the channel when I see him doing in-studio work on Versus.
E.J. McGuire:
Random GM Facts: McGuire was an Assistant Coach for the Hawks from 1989-91. He is currently the director of the NHL Central Scouting Bureau.
Jacques Martin:
Random GM Facts: Martin has been head coach of the Blues, Senators and Panthers. He's currently the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens - no pressure in that job.
Every sports fan has the teams that they'll remember all of the players and personalities from. Last year's Stanley Cup winning team will always be #1 in my book of favorite Blackhawks squads, but this 1989-90 team would be a close second!
